Natural sapling growth

Something neat I could see s quite small/ maybe on occasion when 2 trees are close enough to each other say in 20 blocks they have a chance to spawn a sapling on any dirt block 1-2 blocks out of that range. It would allow for natural albeit slow forest regrowth and would allow a certain level of life to be added not one of mobs but one of the plants. A similar thing could be done with flower patches and other plants.
