Log Like Placement For Pumpkins/Melons

Hey, I've been building with pumpkins, and I was wondering. Is it possible to have pumpkins placed in different directions, like wooden logs? I feel this would open up a lot of different building opportunities. Melons would also have to be changed too though. 

I'm starting to see an issue. This would be more difficult to do for carved pumpkins, as you'd have to factor in a lot of different directions, for sideways pumpkins. this will require way more work then I was first thinking. Maybe they could be placed like stairs do? Maybe this is why this hasn't been changed yet. Either way, it still sounds cool. Even if it's a bit of a hassle.
