People play 1.8 for its combat features. After 1.8, your no longer able to Defend yourself with just a sword which forced people to make shield. What about if we had the blocking feature if your only using a sword? Where it can block some of the damage, but you still get hurt but not as much as if your not blocking at all. This would add another style of fighting in minecraft.
To make it more balanced, if your only using a Sword, the sword would be faster to max damage, but blocking with a sword doesn't give you 100% protection like the shield does.
