Minecarts are not the most useful part of the game- they're too slow, and too expensive to set up to be practical for transportation, requiring an abundance of materials for rails, infrastructure, and the minecarts themselves. To remedy this change, I recommend changing the recipes of Normal, Activator, & Detector Rails to use copper instead of iron.
This would make rails substantially easier to craft. (Rails in existing worlds could, of course, be changed to copper. They would still function identically to their iron counterparts.) In addition, I would recommend increasing the power of furnace minecarts to make them more practical for travel, and giving the ability to link different types of minecarts, (Chest, Furnace, etc.) using chains, to avoid the usual finnicking with collisions when trying to make a train of carts.
Iron rails could still exist, but could be re implemented with new properties- perhaps allowing minecarts to retain their speed for much longer, making them more useful for their considerable expense.
