New Item Idea: Flares

With the new caves (post 1.18) being so big and dark, a throwable (maybe launch-able from crossbows), temporary-light source would be really helpful for exploring as an alternative to night vision potions. The thought is that, if lighting in midair is not feasible, the light would stick where it lands and light up the area for a finite period of time (10 seconds?) allowing the explorer to get an idea of how big the cave is and which direction might be the most interesting to go.

    What makes you say that? It could be very useful early game when you need to traverse the depths to get diamonds and obsidian.

    Are you suggesting that fireworks provide this functionality? Fireworks can't be thrown forward by hand.  I haven't checked to see if they provide temporary illumination when launched from crossbow though.
