This idea is sort of a story update while not at the same time. The stories/lore added to the game is about those people that have inhabited the world long before Steve came along.
Scattered throughout the world and in structures the player may find books with lore written in them. This lore is based around some person or group from the past. Each book that the player finds can guide the player to the location of another book, thus continuing the story. The found book might lead the player to structures as well that the people have explored. For instance, this could be another way to search for a stronghold, if the storyline being followed guides the player to one. This could extend into where to build nether portals and have stories cross dimensions.
This update would also be good for bringing archaeology to Minecraft. The other half of this update could be based around a new passive-aggressive boss "The Record Keeper". This boss spawns in its own structure, a massive library. In the library there are chests fill with books filled with information on current mobs, legends(potential hints at new bosses), basic building instructions/blueprints, scrapped ideas/mobs that never made it to release "extinct creatures". The player can read the information in the library however if the player tries to leave with a book the Boss will become highly aggressive and try to defeat the player.
