Right now as of 1.18, leather armor is sitting at an awkward spot, it's not really viable.
Here is why:
Elytra's trade Defense for Transportation.
Gold trades better defense for safer nether traveling & better enchantment rolls.
Diamond and Netherite sit at the best armors, with being harder to obtain.
Chain is more novelty.
Iron sits as a "Basic Armor".
leather's main feature being dyed & traveling on powdered snow for what cost...? Defense...?
For the 1.19 update I wish for leather being able to be viable in the Deep Dark regions to challenge Netherite armor. Players could either choose to hone their stealth, or tank on the Deep Dark.
I see multiple ways to see this being possible, either Leather could get a unique enchantment to reduce player noise, or help boost Invisibility Potions by "trapping" particle effects. Or even leather armor could even be given an "repulsive odor" for the warden, but can be over-ruled if the player attacks said warden. We have seen in the MC:Live 2020 & 2021 video demonstrations that Netherite gear is not going to be enough to tank the warden head-on, so why not make the leather's greatest weakness it's best strength, trade defense for better stealth!
Leather has been known in the real world to be a common choice for stealth as it makes little noise and can be worked with to "Muffle" sounds of the wearer, why not apply those traits into Minecraft?
