From my own survival playtesting, many biomes can stretch for hundreds and hundreds of blocks, continuing on after tens of minutes of traveling. I feel this decreases the amount of variety to the world generation and makes exploration less gratifying, as newly explored terrain becomes less distinct and can lack identifying landmarks. The current biome size is especially evident through less interesting biomes such as the plains, which in some of the worlds I've generated stretch as far as the eye can see. Another side effect of the larger biomes is having to traverse much greater distances for exotic materials such as the various wood types, or calcite via the stony peaks, etc. I appreciate the spirit of the change but feel the current size is a little much! :)
