In light of Mojang's recent efforts (snapshot 21w40a etc.) to improve dungeons, I think that it would make more sense for dungeons to no longer be treated as whole entire structures by themselves. Instead, they should be looked at as a room that can generate within several different structures.
I think this would work better because while dungeons currently aren't much of a challenge when just a single lone room, they could work to add more challenge and danger, with guaranteed rewards from the chests, to environments that are already challenging. Imagine walking down a mineshaft corridor and seeing an opening into a cobblestone room covered in webs, or opening an iron door in a stronghold and letting loose the skeletons from the spawner inside the dungeon on the other side.
While we don't yet know what structures generate in the Deep Dark, I'm sure that a similar approach could be taken towards this.
It would allow for a familar concept and challenge throughout all of Minecraft's underground structures, be they already existing or yet to be even thought up, and give players an option to risk an extra challenge for what could be in the chests.
Just a thought :)
