Currently, when zooming out a map, the current map area is one of the 4 quadrants of the next map larger. If you are at the origin (0,0) on your first map you'll be at the center. The next map you'll be up in the top left quadrant, and by the time you zoom to the level of a Bedrock starter map (level 3) you will be way up in the corner. It's really just doesn't seem great form a gameplay perspective.
What I think would be better is if maps zoomed from the center. The first map still stays from 64,64 to -64,-64. Next zoom level is 128,128 to -128,-128 instead of 64,64 to -192,-192. So if you were in the center before you are still in the center.
Maps would still align to a grid so maps of the same zoom level would work on map walls. It would be more intuitive because it would actually match the zoom map icon on the cartography table - and honestly it's just more intuitive.
There would be reverse compatibility issues, but other than that I don't see a downside
