Hi everyone,
I’m writing to suggest a feature that I believe would fundamentally transform the exploration experience in Minecraft: Native Level of Detail (LOD) rendering.
Currently, the vanilla game relies on loading full chunks to display distant terrain. This puts a heavy synchronized load on both the CPU and GPU, making high render distances (32+ chunks) nearly unplayable for most users.
I’ve been incredibly impressed by the "Distant Horizons" mod, which uses LODs to allow for massive, breathtaking vistas with minimal performance impact. I believe bringing a similar system to the vanilla engine would be a game-changer for several reasons:
-
Immense Scale: It would allow players to see distant biomes and structures, making the world feel truly infinite.
-
Performance Optimization: By rendering simplified geometry for distant objects, the game could maintain high FPS even with "extreme" visual distances.
-
Accessibility: Players on mid-range or lower-end hardware could finally enjoy beautiful landscapes that are currently locked behind high-end specs.
While I love the current aesthetic, the "fog" often feels like a limitation of the past. Implementing a native LOD system would bring Minecraft’s technical capabilities up to modern gaming standards.
What do you all think? I’d love to hear the community’s and developers’ thoughts on this!
