"Using shears on the tip of a Cave Vine, Twisting Vine, Weeping Wine or Kelp now causes it to stop growing" -21w37a patchnotes
A great many players have expressed interest in this being a thing; this feature has been wanted for a long time, and the fact that it's finally been implemented, but only on certain plants, is a bit disappointing.
This would require rewriting normal vines, sugarcane, etc. to use the "age" system that newer multi-block plants use, but that could be better for performance anyway to stop excessive vine growth in jungles, for example, and would give parity between multi-block plants.
The ability to do this with saplings would also be another appreciated feature.
This would all greatly expand lush decoration options without resorting to the "string above/below" trick.
Addendum: Slightly different textures for max-age plants would also be nice, so it would be easier to tell which vines/plants/etc. have been "shear-stopped" and which have not. Vines in particular could use a less blocky bottom block to match with the nicer tips of twisted vines and glowberry vines.
