The toughness mechanic right now is really confusing, and nobody really understands it. Here I have some ideas to make it simpler to understand.
Toughness value
Toughness should be extend to all armors but Leather, because it makes sense.
- Iron and Netherite: +3 Toughness
- Diamond and Gold: +2 Toughness
- Chainmail: +1 Toughness
- Leather: 0 Toughness
This will make other armor sets more usefull and valid against high level armors
Toughness mechanic
The current damage reduction system is that greater the damage, lesser the reduction, and vice versa: lesser the damage, greater the reduction. Toughness prevents this, but in a really confusing way. Here I have a method that might be simpler
- If the damage is less than 5 dmg, then it's reduced by the armors defense totally, without piercing the armor
- If the damage is greater than 6 dmg, then it will pierce through the armor, reducing the defense by 3% per dmg point, so a sword that deals 13 dmg, its damage will be reduced by 59% instead of 80%, so we will get 5.33 dmg instead of only 2.6 dmg
- Armor toughness, increases the amount of damage needed to pierce through armor; every 2 Toughness points an extra damage point is needed to pierce, so to pierce through a Netherite armor, we need at least 12 damage, so a 13 dmg attack will be reduced by 77% instead of 80%
I think this calculation would be easier to understand for players
