This feature have been requested since 1.9. We are supouse to choose between protection or mobility in order to add some difficulty to the game, but in reality we just put our chetplate after land and change to elytra before take off. Let's be honest, at endgame the only hard time mobs give us is in mines, a place where no one wear an elytra. This feature is more annoying than challenging. So, inspired by the youtuber SystemZee I have a some ideas about how to implement a good system to merge this two items.
1- The addition of a new item that will allow us to join the elytra and chestplate. This item will be found using the new archeology system. Can be an arcane bolt or some rare object. I think this can be a good adition to incentive people to use archeology apart from make vessels.
2- Make this bolt be drop by the boss of the new dimension, skylands. This dimension is underreview, mojang have even hire the developer of aether, so I think that sooner or later this will be implemented. Moreover, this fit skylands perfectly, been able to fly like an angle full armor would be pretty cool. (Will take years tho).
3- Use bee wax to glue the elytra, resembling Icaro.
Elytra will share durability with the chestplate and as they are 2 different materials, the only way to repair it will be through magic, using mending. Also to add some handicap.
