From the snippets of views given to us at minecon live. The archaeology fetures in 1.18 seem a little out of place, first of all, I personally think that it feels a bit out of place in all of minecraft. So far the updates have been unique but at least somewhat predictable with the most 'New' this being the trident and that was not too out of place. If archaeology is a thing that need to be added (I would like some more lore and ambiance to the world, so the core idea im happy with) perhaps just add more ruined structures where, around there you can sift for items and ores, for example around jungle temples you could find jungle related pots and red stone blocks or desert temples would have diamond blocks or ruined portals have obsidian blocks ect.. This would also make desert wells useful. This i feel would integrate the sifting mechanic into the game more smoothly than having straight up excavation sites which wouldn't make much sense. (There were obvious people who built the structures why would they make an excavation site for their own structures) perhaps something like a 10 block radius around a ancient structure can be sifted.
