Updates are one of a few things which keep minecraft still alive. But I think that current update phylosophy is not ideal and in the long term, it will probably hurt the franchise. Once every 2 or so years, mojang releases a big update (for example Aquatic update, nether update etc.). Smaller updates are uncommon (like 1.10, 1.15). But these smaller updates have a big potential. Instead of making big changes in one aspect of the game, these updates would change small things, fix few bugs, update already updated things etc. I imagine that every other update would be a small not-themed update. Why? Themed big updates creates hype between fans. Hype is dangerous. When update is not "sufficient" for fans, they get angry, mostly because they think that mojang will never return to this aspect of the game. For example, nether was added in the early days of minecraft, it was updateted twice (1.4 and 1.10) (if I remember correctly) before 1.16, which is 2 updates of nether during ~10 years! Fans were hyped about big changes for the nether. During one mojang live stream, one of mojang emploees said that no more biomes will be added (this was after twisted and crimson forest and soul sand valey were added and before basalt deltas). Fans started to mistreat this emploee for what they said. Obviously, this behavior is unacceptable, but we should try to understand why did fans behaved like this. Answer is clear. They were afraid that nether will be like this forever.
