A furnace can be made from clay or bricks

Furnace doesn't have to be cobblestone. I think that any of the eight cobblestone blocks in the recipe can be replaced with a clay block or any brick block. The result is the same furnace.

    Wouldn't this feature not be used seeing cobblestone is waaaay more common than clay or bricks?

    it would be a use for the previously (nearly) unused bricks item, if not a very common one, as you need a furnace to get bricks...

    Sandstone - could also come in handy.

    Yes, the player needs a furnace to make bricks. But what if the player already has one furnace and needs more? In addition, you can add the mechanics of making bricks at the campfire. Not to mention that the player can get bricks from encountered buildings.
