With the introduction of new biomes and plants the overworld's forests have started to look outdated. Here are some of my suggestions.
Trees:
Trees have started to look outdated. a good way for trees to updated is to add branches and to make the trucks more complex by adding roots or burls
Bushes:
I think bushes would make Minecraft's forests more diverse and interesting. Bushes could be just piles of preexisting leaves with a chance of loot in them or variants or sweet berry bushes. Bushes can have a chance of loot tucked in their dense leaves.
New mobs:
Just like real forests they can have unique mobs such as deer which would drop venison when killed or bush monsters that attack the player with their spiked thorns but are weak to fire.
effects:
Like the forests in the nether they could have ever present effects like leave falling and the creaking of wood.
These are just my ideas for updated forests
