I really hope rivers won't continue to be boring perlin noise or whatever they are. But I know it's difficult programming intelligent generation. Could rivers start at mountains and flow down into oceans and lakes, rivers flowing down, very rarely creating waterfalls (more common off mountains) getting wider as more steams connect. Lakes have a higher level than 60. As if there's some giant water network in the world that generates based on the biome gen or biome generation is based on it.
Water is one of the most powerful forces influencing the biosphere of Earth, and in minecraft water is the only parallel. There's no tectonics, so it should be integral to the layout of biomes. There's water and land, why should land get all the variation? It would also be cool if the world had larger scale "slopes" to the land height, like just another layer of noise.
