Minecraft is lacking when it comes to area of effect weapons. Hordes of mobs are a somewhat common occurrence though, particularly in the case of raids and zombie sieges, so I think area of effect weapons have a place in Minecraft.
The Dragonfire Staff would be a close-range magic weapon that could be charged up with right-click, similarly to a bow, but with a shorter charge-time due to being close-range. Upon releasing right-click, it would shoot a blast of energy with a similar look to dragon's breath that extends out to 3 blocks away from where the player is looking in the shape of a cone, and any mobs in the area take 5 damage (equivalent to a stone sword, but the area of effect makes it quite strong). The staff would use durability and be a loot reward from either a new structure or a mob. It would also be able to be enchanted, and two new enchantments would be added to change the effectiveness of the staff:
- Increased range of the staff's blast (1 block per level)
- Increased damage of the staff's blast (similar scaling to sharpness)
This item is themed around a potential update to the end, but its functionality could be applied to any theme.
