Improvement to tamed horses

Ok hear me out, I feel like an idea like this has already been suggested but I think a huge improvement would be to make the horses something that is actually worth getting because in my world I've had it for a while and since I already have an elytra riding horses is some what of a joke and i think puting a system in such as training the horses physical attributes (speed and jump height) would be amazing. I personally love horses I enjoy collecting them and riding them around but the biggest pain is when they wander off. I would stop for a moment to craft something and my horse is off on his own journey. The one thing that I want is for horses to follow you and be able to make them stay. Im asking this because i don't always have a lead on hand or is too much work to dig a hole. Is it too much to ask to just have horses follow you that would be an improvement by itself. If you actually read this thank you for your consideration.

    Here is a summary of the post: Horses are not useful once you have elytra, so horses should be able to be trained, increasing speed and jump height. There should be a way to make horses follow you or make them stay.
