How to fix leather armour

Dear Minecraft Team!

I have thought long and hard about what needs to be changed in Minecraft! One of these things is leather armour.
As you all probably know, leather armor is hardly ever used in Minecraft. Which is a shame! 
The reason for this is that leather armor 1. Is very poor quality (because it should be equivalent to the wooden sword, i.e., wooden sword and leather armor < stone sword and chain mail armor, etc.)
2. Because it is very expensive. 
I know that leather armor cannot simply be made stronger.

Leather armor is too expensive! Way too expensive! You have to kill about 24 cows to craft a full set of leather armor! 24!
I know a game where you can make 4 complete leather armors from one cow!

     The solution to the problem is as follows:
     One leather can be crafted into 4 pieces of leather.
     One rabbit hide can be crafted into 2 pieces of leather. 

From now on, leather armor will be crafted from pieces of leather!
This solves the problem without destroying Minecraft features. Now you only need 6 cows, which makes leather armor quite useful at the beginning. It's also more realistic!

Furthermore, this could also be applied to other crafting recipes:
Item frame from 1 piece of leather and 4 sticks (making item frames into blocks instead of entities would be very sensible, by the way).
Books (maybe 2 pieces of leather)                                                                          ...

So: What's the argument against it?
