Right clicking on a gravel block with a hoe will "rake" it. If you are looking in a cardinal direction, this will create a straight pattern. If you are looking in a diagonal direction, it will create a quarter circle pattern. The intended use would be for making Zen gardens, but I'm sure players would find other creative uses for it.
I think it would be nice if this also shorted the block slightly, like farm land or path blocks. That would make the block useful for making paths through stony areas. Gravel paths blend in quite well to stony areas already.
Another potential feature is that "trampling" it would turn it back into regular gravel, like how trampling farm land turns it back into dirt. This might encourage players to re-do their Zen gardens occasionally, but it would make it less functional as a gravel path. Then again, perhaps raked gravel could be waxed to make it untrumpable, but that might be tedious.
I realize similar ideas have been proposed for sand, and that would be great too, but I think gravel is better for Zen gardens.
