My idea is to develop the biome; not everything needs to be in the game, but every part has a place.
1. Sandstone and other soul sand blocks.
The game has sandstone and various blocks made of regular, red sand, but none made of soul sand. A carved sand block could be made with a Ghastling's face. Specifically, a Ghastling, not a Ghast, cementing the idea of a new mob.
The builders will thank you!
2. Small structures (like a well).
You don't have to add many structures to the biome, but totems made of sandstone and sand bricks with a carved block at the top—I think such small elements would enhance the feel of the biome. The structures themselves won't generate as often, but they will emphasize the biome.
3. Trees.
No, these aren't forests, just solitary trees that can be found occasionally. Perhaps these trees (which appear quite rarely) will grow on soul soil. Minimal foliage, dark gray bark, and dark gray planks. This tree seems to be crying, creating a sense of sadness and mystery in the biome.
4. Suspicious soul sand.
Archaeology needs to be developed. To distinguish it from regular soul sand, I think we could add small blue specks—like souls. These would be new patterns and a new type and color of pots that would tell the story of the Nether. A new color for pots that would integrate well into the Nether/Nether fortresses.
