Randomly on hard/hardcore mode there would be chance that the moon cycle that night would be green. This event can also be triggered via drinking an ominous bottle during the day, which would now allow the player to sleep and wake at the start of the new night. The jade moon event would cause the moon to turn light green, with a bright green outline.
During this event; the hostile mob cap would be increased to allow more mobs to spawn, all hostile mobs will have a higher chance to wear stronger armor and wield better tools, mobs can spawn with natural permanent potions effects, neutral mobs (minus iron golems and tamed mobs) are all naturally hostile, mobs health could be buffed during the event, rarer hostile mob drops (iron from zombies for example) would be increased, and other things that could make it more difficult and rewarding.
Some mobs may spawn with armor with a new armor trim: the monster trim. The trim will drop as an item when a mob wearing it is slain, and is purely cosmetic.
Full Jade Moons have more magical themes and effects, while New Jade Moons are more about raw damage. Creepers may spawn with potion effects during a Full Jade Moon, while zombie and skeleton horse jockeys would spawn more often during New Jade Moons.
This feature could give more experienced players a good challenge, and possibly have a more useful exclusive item to encourage triggering this encounter/experiencing it. The player may skip it by sleeping as long as mobs aren't nearby.
