I love allays! I think it's very cool to finally have a fairy-like mob in the game. But currently, they have a few problems:
1. They're too skittish and easily lost unlike other pets
2. They die / get lost too easily
3. They lack more practical uses
Each of these can be easily fixed, however, with a few simple changes!
We can easily fix the first problem by making the allays tamable, probably with amethyst or maybe cookies. Taming an allay gives the same functionality as other tamed mobs: They teleport to you when far away, and most importantly, they no longer receive items from other players, because currently, any player can just steal your beloved pet allay by giving it an item. Taming is something that I think is very needed, and I think this is the most important change that should be added; nobody wants their pet to be stolen away so easily!
The second problem only needs a few changes. Things like making allays dodge arrows and making them actively flee from creepers, which are one of the few things that can actually kill them, would go a long way. Also, they should teleport back to you if you die, since right now they have a tendency to wander off after you're dead.
As for practical uses, some cool ideas are the obvious one of letting them pick up and bring back arrows you shoot. Another very cool option would be allowing them to bring items to other players online, but this might need some sort of an interface.
