When you cut a log, it now drops bark. Four pieces of bark can be crafted into a bark block (a hollow log, like the one in the birch forest screenshots), which can be placed in different directions. A log and two pieces of bark produce wood.
You can also make paper from the bark.
Clicking a bark block with an axe will cut out one side, which will drop as an item. The block itself will be considered a hollow, a popular hiding place for dogs, cats, and parrots (like pet houses).
Clicking a stripped log with bark allows you to add bark to it by changing the texture on any side (like mushroom blocks).
Clicking a stripped log with an axe will change the texture on the side you click to inner wood (dropping bark), yielding a block of inner wood.
All blocks in the trees will be wood, but when they touch, they will merge into a log, with an inner wood texture between them (mechanics like mushroom blocks)
When placing multiple hewn logs, the texture between them merges (like a mushroom block), causing their outer textures to merge into a single texture. Bark can then be added to the side edges, creating a large stump.
This feature will be available in classic generation for trees such as dark & pale oak, mega jungle tree, mega spruce, and pine.
