Stair Shape Changing

I know you can technically change how stairs are shaped by placing other stairs next to them in certain ways, but I wish there was a way to make them KEEP that shape after you break the block, or just a way to change their shape without needing other stairs.

When I place one block to make one change its shape, I don't really have a way to make it hold that shape without keeping the second stair block there, when I don't want it to stay on the build, I just want to change the shape of the first one.
