Adding much more diversity in food crafting would greatly expand early and midgame to multiple playstyles. We have so many ingredients and edible items already, but stuff like Eggs and Beetroots are severely underutilized. I don't mean to rebalance what's already there, just fatten up the cookbook a bit.
Without adding any new ingredients or edibles, we can make kebabs, salads, meals, and so on. We can even almost make sushi.
It could also be cool to create a new soup crafter by combining a campfire and cauldron. (soups can be bowled or bottled, depending on preference, and cauldrons hold the same amount of soup as they would a potion) Also it'd be neat to be able to produce more complete meals that may last more than one use (like cake but actually useful), like a steak, eggs and potato meal that heals and provides saturation equivalent to steak, but lasts three uses.
Being able to make chocolate using cocoa beans, milk and sugar would be a neat dessert addition as well. (I'm also partial to granting the worst foodstuffs temporary buffs, like chocolate doesn't heal you but it does grant a temporary speed boost followed by a short slow debuff.)
There's so much that can be done with food as-is and I'd love to see Minecraft take on a slice of life angle on top of all of its other wonderful updates.
