The nether looks very good both in the default render distance and on higher ones. Though it's a shame that you never get to see it more clearly without resourcepacks because it looks amazing and honestly has that kind of interstellar movie feel. Since both settings look good, make it so seeing them is dependant on the time the nether changes its "weather".
This would make it even more mysterious and stunning at times. There'd be times where you'd be looking for the portal with all the haziness, making the way home a harsh time, and others where the fog opens up and it makes you just appreciate the view over a lava lake
