When I fed a large giraffe at the zoo, it stared into my soul. I was instantly connected, and that inspired me to write this post.
Giraffes would be added as a new rideable mob found in all Savanna biomes, offering a unique height-based playstyle. Adult giraffes stand about 6.5 blocks tall, have 20 hearts, and babies start with fewer hearts that increase as they grow. Players can saddle giraffes (using a standard saddle that converts into a specialized giraffe mount, similar to camels) and ride a single rider seated high on the mane. The giraffe’s neck slightly blocks forward view, but the rider can rotate freely.
Giraffes can perform short speed bursts, slower and more limited than camels. Their main advantage is height: while riding, players gain a moving vantage point for exploring and safaris across their world, spotting mobs from above while still facing threats from ranged enemies.
Giraffes are bred with Acacia leaves and will follow players holding them. Because of their height, they require tall spaces for protection: at least a 7-block-high roof and a two-fence-high enclosure. They do not jump while being ridden. Overall, giraffes provide a flavorful, balanced mount focused on vertical exploration and awareness rather than speed, fitting naturally alongside existing Minecraft mounts.
