With the recent release of Minecraft 1.21.11 in a deobfuscated form, it’s clear that providing readable source mappings is both possible and extremely valuable for the community.
I’d like to suggest publishing deobfuscated versions (or official readable mappings) for a small set of key “base” Minecraft versions, rather than every single release.
Examples of highly impactful versions:
- 1.8.8 / 1.8.9 (still widely used in PvP and legacy servers)
- 1.12.x (one of the largest long-term modding ecosystems)
- 1.13 (major technical rewrite and foundation for modern versions)
Benefits of providing these:
- Reduces unsafe reverse engineering and unofficial tooling
- Improves mod, plugin, and tooling quality
- Helps preserve legacy ecosystems that are still active today
- Lowers the maintenance cost for community developers and educators
- Creates a more transparent and collaborative relationship with technical creators
This wouldn’t require maintaining every historical version, only a curated set of foundational releases that still matter today.
The 1.21.11 release shows this approach is feasible, and extending it to a few key versions would have a lasting positive impact on the Minecraft development ecosystem.
