It would probably be cool if they added mushroom gnomes that would disguise themselves as mushroom blocks, and when the player breaks mushrooms, he would accidentally dig up a mushroom gnome.
Below is a full description of this gnome:
The Mushroom Gnome is a tiny neutral creature found in the Mushroom Fields biome and inside giant mushrooms. It appears as a small gnome, one block tall, with a thick beard and a bright mushroom hat.
Spawning:
Spawns when harvesting giant mushrooms (red and brown).
Spawn chance from breaking a mushroom block: 20%.

The hat has a durability of 60 uses (each fall save consumes one charge).
Trading with a Mushroom Gnome:
Example trades:
5 red mushrooms → 1 coal torch (gnomes need "warmth")
8 brown mushrooms → 1 bone meal
A player can lure a Gnome by holding a mushroom (like cows with wheat).
