New mechanic for chainmail armor

Chainmail armor in Minecraft currently feels like the most useless armor in the game. It cannot be crafted, it is weaker than iron, and it is no longer rare enough to be valuable for collecting.
I would like to suggest a new idea: allow players to wear chainmail underneath their main armor, as long as the main armor is not chainmail itself.
The protection from both armors would stack, providing bonuses such as increased defense and knockback resistance. To keep this balanced, there could also be negative effects, such as slower movement speed or reduced weapon reload speed due to the extra weight and restricted mobility.

    The armor protection shouldn't stack cuz if it did you would be basically immortal due to having more than 100% damage reduction but maybe just making chainmail add extra armor thoughness and knockback resistance to any armor you are wearing and losing less durability than it normally would could be enough. It should still lose durability and burn when on fire or thrown to lava even under netherite (but netherite would still be fine). Also the enchantments chainmail has shouldn't work unless you take off the armor above it.
