Naturally generated in the deep dark, sculk has a small chance to be a rotten one. It would generate in small clusters like ores do. It has no green animated particles like the normal sculk, making it possible to differentiate both sculk forms.
When the player walks over rotten sculk, he sinks into the block and starts to lose hearts (rotten sculk works like powdered snow, expect for not having a freezing timer). This would force the player to break the block and make a noise. And when running away from the warden, sinking into rotten skulk could be a death sentence.
Leather boots provide the player from sinking, making it a choice between protection and safety.
Rotten sculk does not drop XP as sculk does when farmed.
