I propose improving melee hostile mob combat AI so that players can no longer "pillar up" a few blocks and cheese encounters.
1. Slight vertical reach increase (for mobs with arms)
Give melee hostile mobs that have arms (zombies, melee skeletons, piglins, endermen, vindicator etc.) a small vertical reach boost when their target is directly above them and close to their hitbox.
In snapshot 22w12a, the Warden could already hit players standing on 4-block pillars before its sonic boom attack was added.
Similarly, armed mobs should be able to damage a player standing on a 2–3 block column if the player is within horizontal melee range.
This removes the exploit where players can just tower up and attack mobs with no risk.
2. Simple jump attack (for mobs with arms)
If a mob with arms cannot reach its target because the player is slightly above normal melee range and there is no path up, the mob can do a short jump and attempt a mid-air melee attack.
This won’t make mobs parkour experts—it only lets them occasionally hit players who rely on standing slightly higher as a cheesy tactic.
These changes would make PvE more dynamic, reduce pillar cheesing, and encourage players to use movement, equipment, and positioning instead of abusing easy building tricks.
