Hello id like to suggest an improvement to Minecrafts version numbering system to make it more clean and easier for both players and mod developers to follow. Currently, versions like 1.21.1 or 1.21.7 can be confusing, as it’s not immediately clear which updates add major content and which are just bug fixes or minor optimizations.
My suggestion: A year- and month-based versioning system.
Year based major version: For example, 1.25 would represent the major updates for the year 2025.
Month based updates: Minor and bug fix updates would use the month as the number. For example
1.25.1 → January 2025 (bug fixes)
1.25.3 → March 2025 (first of every 4 small updates which adds content)
1.25.11 → November 2025 (bug fixes)
Quarterly major content updates Larger updates with new content could occur in March, June, September, and December. For example
1.25.3 → March 2025 (major content update)
1.25.6 → June 2025 (major content update)
This system would clearly differentiate between bug fix updates and major content updates. It would also make it easier for mod developers to know which versions to target for compatibility. Additionally, it aligns nicely with Microsoft’s general pattern of four major updates per year because it will ve more clean and easy to follow it
This system keeps version numbers clear, predictable, and easy to understand. It avoids confusiom while making it obvious which updates are content-heavy and which are maintenance patches
