NOTE: THIS HAS BEEN SUGGESTED MANY TIMES, BUT NOT WITH THE SERVER PART WHICH IS NECESSARY FOR THIS SYSTEM TO WORK IN MULTIPLAYER.
Datapacks and Resource Packs being seperate makes no sense, they often require each other and Bedrock already combines them into Add-Ons which are easy to download and use. Distributing them seperately is such an unecessary hassle and makes it harder to share content.
The Idea is to simply have one folder for both with the subfolders "data" and "assets". This would work on Singleplayer as it does now.
For Multiplayer a change would be required that allows for resources to be downloaded directly from the server. Datapacks already work by being in the server files, so why shouldn't Resource Packs? Another big hassle, hosting them on some file sharing site or opening up ports on your router to self-host.
Pros:
- Easier content sharing
- Easier installation
- No external hosting required
- Faster development for servers with Resource Packs
- Similarity to Bedrock Add-Ons
- Lower entry barrier for creators
