With the new lunge enchant, Im worried that with further similar additions, it will get harder to do significant changes to the hunger system in the future. Currently it's hard to see any reason to add new food items to the game. Most food items are already pretty redundant when one defaults to one food type and anything else is inventory clutter. Hope there will be some modifications to it in the future. My ideas after thinking about it:
Separate health regeneration, stamina and hunger. Have the main drive for food items being effects given by different food items. Golden apples do that already, but are too similar to potions since it's an effect on use with a duration. Instead, I would change the hunger bar to be a stored effect bar for 10 effects that trigger under circumstances and consumed. A looting food item will give you looting effect and change one of the empty points on the hunger bar to a looting effect type icon. On the next creature killed, you get the looting effect and its removed from your hunger bar. An air bubble food item effect will trigger when under water and half your air bubbles are used up, restoring them and removing it from your hunger bar. This way, food items are preparatory effects, where potions are direct effects, differentiating them. Would open the possibility for making interesting new food items in upcoming updates. This way, making food will be optional, not mandatory, and maybe more fun. Have loads of effect ideas :)
