Currently, with how Datapacks are implemented, removing them when there's custom items that use data-driven features (such as Banner patterns) will clear the data-driven features. I understand why this is the case, due to how components are implemented, but it makes using Datapacks a chore. And with how Datapacks have been updated recently, with near-constant changes to how data is actually formed and stored, it's volatile and almost useless to actually use data-driven features.
My Suggestion is that custom data will remain when the Datapack is removed. It'll be nonfunctionable, showing missing textures or maybe simply nothing at all, but it will still remain in the data of the item or entity. How that's implemented with how components are, that's up to Mojang. But as the system is now, I have no desire to use these features.
