Chainmail isn’t craftable, and I’ve always thought of it as the forgotten armor in Minecraft. So here’s a vanilla-friendly way to fix that!
Let’s add a new ore: Steel. It would act like a mix between iron and copper but with its own unique purpose. When you mine Steel Ore, it drops Steel Scraps, which can be smelted into Steel Ingots.
With these, you can finally craft Chainmail Armor! Instead of using chains, you’d use steel scraps and ingots to form the classic armor—giving it a proper recipe at last. Chainmail would sit perfectly between Iron and Diamond in strength and durability, making it a real mid-tier armor worth upgrading to.
Steel could also be used to reinforce shields—simply combine your wooden shield with steel scraps to create a Steel Shield with higher durability and maybe a slight knockback resistance bonus. Steel ore veins would generate in clusters of 1–7, similar to iron.
This addition would finally make Chainmail feel visible again—no longer the forgotten armor, but a real part of progression between Iron and Diamond. ⚔️
