maybe if it loses a lot of durability only when it hits an entity, and doesn't use much when it doesn't hit anything(-1 durability for example). Also, it needs mending to be compatible with lunge.

Absolutely, since lunging a movement rather than a use of the weapon that could cause damage (attacking, etc). Or at least lower it to 1 durability similar to Riptide. Or, better yet, make both Riptide and Lunging use hunger bars.

If it hits an enemy though, a bigger durability loss seems alright. Definitely not where it's at now though.

Yes! I actually thought of this but found this. It could bea cooldown but that would make it bad for parkour. I thouglt that one lunge could take one hunger from the player. We need this to gain popularity and thank you so much for posting.

That's a good idea! But I think it could be done like this: When you use Lunge, a little durability is removed from your spear, a little hunger is removed from you (0.5, for example), and if you lunge too many times (say, 3-4 times without stopping), you are inflicted with the "Fatigue" effect, and you can't run or lunge for about 4-10 seconds (this is just a placeholder; if they did this, they could specify as many seconds as the developers wanted).

Now it consumes too much hunger.

I like the idea that the player gets tired from using the lunge, like stamina.

But now you have to be eating constantly. Well, it can be solved with suspicious soups of saturation, but it's not profitable.

The ideal balanced point would be for it to now consume half the hunger it consumed before, and that other half of the penalty is returned to durability, and with Unbreaking III, it's likely it won't be spent.

But making the hunger penalty is something I like, just not so much.

Or simply add more cooldown so it's not overexploited by players.

Although keep in mind that Ender Pearls and Riptide already exist, the lunge isn't as broken as Mojang thinks; there are more powerful items.
