I was thinking, how can Mojang make copper more fun and unique without breaking the game — and this is what I came up with. I genuinely want this suggestion in the game, so please consider voting to help out.
In real life, copper is often used in electrical equipment because it has a great "conductivity"; hence in Minecraft it wouldn't be too odd to make copper items the only items to be able to hold more enchantments as you could say it is very "conductive" with enchantments.
Copper tools should be able to have one more [max +1] enchantment level beyond the normal cap (the damage on a max +1 Sharpness sword should still be less than diamond), and also on some armour enchantments (not Protection [Prot] obviously).
With this, copper could be useful even in the endgame as you could make nuanced gear. To give some examples:
- A max +1 Efficiency axe for a higher chance to stun shields.
- A max +1 Depth Strider full set for maximum swim speed.
- A max +1 Knockback sword for keeping enemies away.
This system adds highly specialised gear that outperforms endgame gear in its specialty, but has the limitations of the un-enchanted copper gear in every other aspect — making it weak in general combat. It would encourage more creative PvP and PvE strategies, while giving copper a late-game role without breaking progression.
