Hello Mojang Team,
I have an idea for a new shadowing system for Minecraft Bedrock that I believe will save a lot of performance while still looking great. I've noticed that the current shadows, like those in Vibrant Visuals, are either constantly moving (like in Plasma Visual) or move very slowly, which still puts a strain on devices.
My idea is to have the shadows move only at specific times. This will make the game run much smoother on a wider range of devices, especially on mobile, without completely sacrificing realism.
Here is my concept for the shadowing system:
Sunlight: Instead of constantly recalculating shadow positions, the shadows would update at set intervals throughout the dayFor example, they could update every two hours (in real-world time), or every few minutes in Minecraft time.
This would create distinct changes in shadow position, mimicking the real sun's movement without continuous rendering.
Player & Mob Shadows: The shadows of players and mobs would still move constantly to look realistic, but their angle would only update at these set time intervals.
Scalable Performance: For players with lower-end devices, this system could be scaled down even further.
The shadows could update only at three key times: morning (6 AM), noon (12 PM), and evening (6 PM).
No Light Source Shadows: I suggest notNo Light Source Shadows: I suggest not including real-time shadows from light sources like torches, as this is a major performance drain.
