Using light sources such as torches and lanterns are generally the most common way of spawn proofing an area. But I believe using light sources shouldn't be the only way someone could spawn proof.
Although you can use leaves, slabs or buttons to prevent mobs from spawning without having to use light, most of the time they usually don't fit the overall vibe you're going for in a build or just dont look in a way that you want them to be.
Lightless Spawn proofing could be something like a mushroom that emits invisible light and has equal or double the effectiveness of a torch. Or something like a totem that can be placed or buried underground and Spawn Proofs a wide area. Regarding the totem idea, maybe it can only prevent certain mobs from spawning like for example a creeper totem could prevent creepers from spawning but allows other hostile mobs to spawn or something like that.
Being able to spawn proof without light gives players an alternative option to spawn proofing beside just lighting an area up with a ton of torches and lanterns.
