In real life copper isn't good for armor and tools because it deforms very quickly, even being less convenient than stone, that's why people used bronze instead. Also, there's so little space between stone and iron to fill but a lot of space between iron and diamond, and some alloys of copper and tin are stronger than iron. So... I suggest to add tin, being rarer than iron but more common than diamond, so we can combine it with copper to make bronze and make bronze gear with it. Bronze armor and tools would have around twice the durability of iron and between 2 and 3 more armor points but without armor thougness. Maybe you can find more uses to tin in the future. Also you can keep the copper gear if you want since it actually adds a little to the game (I personally love it and even found it useful to save iron for other things) but maybe giving it something more unique like oxidation based on durability would be cool too.
