The idea of using the smithing table to upgrade diamond armour to netherite is a great idea, however this doesn't leave any scope for future 'upgrades'. I propose a netherite rework. Netherite would be one of a few materials that can be found in the late game, that can be used as an upgrade to diamond. The new netherite armour, for example, would still give small durability and toughness improvements, but it would also make the player immune to flame and fire aspect, as well as 3-5 seconds of lava immunity. A netherite adjacent material could be added to the End dimension, that would similarly offer small durability and toughness improvements but also offer a new ability similar to that described for netherite, perhaps a double jump, increased build range, a short hover, or ability to grab walls like a grappling hook for example.
I hope you get the idea - basically making netherite one of a few materials that can be used to upgrade diamond to give unique abilities, but that cannot be used together - this would suit different playstyles, and encourage players to create multiple armour sets for different scenarios. It also expands the game's horizontal progression, making the end-game more interesting and diverse.
