As of now, the only use for unwanted tools is to smelt them down in a furnace and turn them into a single nugget based on its original material. This amount currently isn't changed depending on the type of tool or armor being salvaged, despite the fact that something like a chest plate uses eight times the material compared to something like a shovel. The compensation is so small that it's not really worth the time and fuel to smelt them down. This mechanic would be much more useful if the amount of materials you get in exchange was proportional to the amount used in the original recipe, for example, one nugget being given per ingot used in the original crafting recipe. Since furnaces already have an established pattern of giving one item per resource smelted, it could make sense to move this functionality to a different work station, such as the Grindstone or Smithing Table.
