My idea is that copper tools wear down differently than other tools.
When you use a copper tool, it won't lose points like other tools. Instead, a countdown will begin showing how much time you have before the tool breaks. This countdown can be seen by looking at the point bar like any other tool or by seeing how rusty it is. The tool you've used will continue to slowly wear down until it only has one last use left. Copper tools will have a unique way of repairing themselves using wax to recover the points lost due to the countdown. However, with each repair with wax, the countdown will get faster and faster, forcing the player to make another tool or repair it like any other tool eventually.
I think these mechanics could be useful for some players, especially those who like to use axes in combat. Since copper tools' durability is based on time, not uses, they last the same amount of time in combat as they do when felling trees.
To balance things out, stone tools would do more damage than copper ones, and as a bonus, they would push enemies further than weapons made of other materials. Thus, copper would be ideal for longevity, and stone would be ideal early in the game when you're vulnerable to damage and push away threats.
