Minecarts are very slow and expensive when compared to alternatives
My suggestion:
Add copper minecarts - my idea is that they would go at the current speed of minecarts, perhaps oxidising over time to change their speed for the worse (rewarding using the waxing mechanic)
The old minecarts are faster, because iron is more expensive than copper.
Some changes to rails would be nice too, first off they definitely need to be cheaper as currently they are just not worth the iron. This could simply do by giving you more rails per craft or swapping around the iron/gold and sticks in the recipe (although a powered rail rework is less necessary).
Next a change to how rail switching works would go a long way in making rail networks more viable. I would simply suggest that railways can overlap and for switching to implement redstone signal strengths to determine direction.
